• What Is This?

Reclaiming the Sunshine State from Florida Man, one true story at a time

    Journalism

In today's media culture, outrage sells, and Florida has become known for its outrageous residents. Stories about meth heads and gun-toting crazies are a financial bonanza for media networks, but they don't give audiences the whole picture. Florida ManKind strives to produce researched, contextualized journalism about Florida that won't make you want to throw your phone at the wall.

    Impact

Florida as the state America loves to hate doesn't just make Floridians look bad. The cost is much higher than that. Overblown coverage of people behaving badly creates dread, sadness and anger in readers and deepens division. Democracy crumbles when we can't talk to each other, and Florida as ragebait is not only a media-manufactured fiction; it's a how-to guide for the vitriolic partisanship that is eating away at the foundations of our country. Here, we do our best to counteract that.

    Independent

No advertisers means no incentive to whip up indignation. What you read here may not confirm your bias, but it will be 100% factual, researched, and as spin-free as possible.

    About Me

My name is Lauren Shields. I'm a third-generation journalist who moved from California to Florida during COVID-19. When I got here, I noticed that there were no naked men swinging from trees, no alligators on meth; people were wearing masks and social distancing. There were even some #BlackLivesMatter signs on lawns. Where was the Florida I'd made fun of with friends in California?

Here, I use my skills to offer stories that reflect the diversity and values of Floridians that aren't offensive enough to warrant mainstream attention. I cover people who are doing helpful work, being good citizens, and providing a counterbalance to the stories of all those gun-toting gators. (Which I have yet to find. If you see one, please tell me, because I would love to cover it.)
